        Corkigami Chair | Chocolate

        $745.00

The Corkigami Chair, by Spanish designer Carlos Ortega, takes a flat material - cork - and much like paper, folds it in an origami-like manner, hence the name, into a three-dimensional shape that you can actually sit on.

The chair is available in 2 color choices, natural and chocolate.

        STORY

Cork is quite flexible and strong at the same time, and this chair decided to push both of these properties to the limit. The shell rests on a solid oak stool, resulting in a very attractive design. To protect the cork, Ortega applies water-based varnish suitable for hard wearing surfaces such as cork floors, it is very flexible and makes the chair highly durable.

Cork makes for a comfortable seat structure that not only supports your body weight, it conforms to your body as you lean back. Cork is lightweight and is a sustainable material that can easily be recycled making it the perfect material choice. Four layers of 4mm thick cork are pressed flat together using a water-based glue. The shape is cut out, pulled together in place, and glued for extra strength. The natural cork happens to be the same color as the oak wooden legs creating continuity. Four simple screws connect the seat to the legs.

        DESIGNER

As Carlos Ortega started to imagine a seat made entirely out of cork, everyone said it was impossible, then he realized he had a challenge to work on. Cork is natural, sustainable, lightweight, quite strong, flexible, warm. All these qualities make cork a unique material. Corkigami aims to take these properties to the limit, and also refers to the process of making 3D objects from 2D materials.

CORK, A SUSTAINABLE, ECO-FRIENDLY, INNOVATIVE MATERIAL FOR THE HOME

Sustainability has been a hot topic for a good few years now and designers are increasingly looking for materials that have a lesser impact on the environment. Materials that are recycled, recyclable, or come from renewable sources are gaining in popularity and really starting to make their mark in product design and architecture.

However, there are some sustainable materials that have been around for years and that have, until now, been somewhat overlooked. One of these materials is cork, an impermeable, buoyant, elastic and fire resistant material that is harvested from the cork oak forests of Southern Europe and North Africa. Cork comes from the bark of the Cork Oak Tree. The extraction of the bark is a process that doesn’t harm the tree and it is renewable. Every nine years there is new bark to be removed. Cork is a material that comes directly from nature and there is very little processing involved. The ecological footprint from its extraction until the final product is incredibly low compared to the industry average of plastic production.

When you hold a cork object in your hand you notice that you are holding a bit of nature, that’s the beauty of cork. Moreover, because cork is sustainable, the more people buy it, the more the cork industry needs to plant more cork oak trees, and that creates a cycle that is healthy for the environment of our planet. So supporting cork is supporting nature. When designers find cork, they find a perfect material for their creations, one that responds to all of their concerns because it is aesthetically beautiful, functional and eco-friendly.

        Gap Chair

        $495.00

Produced by the latest CNC technology and hand finished in Spain, the FSC oak wood Gap Chair is great both in a home and office settings.

Great in small spaces, the Gap Chair is stackable and can go outdoors.

        STORY

Taking a very artistic approach, the wave-inspired Gap chair is as beautiful to look at as it is comfortable to sit on. The individual cross beams help support the frame structurally while creating a sleek, striking look.

The wavy cross bars that form the seat and back have “gaps” that are needed for stabilization, hence the name. It also refers to the “border between indoors and outdoors, fusing them into one”, since the chair works indoors as well as out.

The chair is held together with screws to help withstand the elements of the outdoors, something glue wouldn’t be able to do. All components are mechanized using low-waste CNC technology. The traditional mortise and tenon structure is held together by means of screws. Gap optimizes material: it uses just 0,016 sq mt from the thinnest sawn boards normally available.

        STORY

Both the Giro Table and it's set companion, the upholstered Stack Chair, feature detachable legs and are finished with Formica for durability. The beautifully intricate finger joinery is just amazing. Advancing both form and function, the traditional technique allows for hardware-free assembly (not to mention disassembly) without sacrificing sturdiness.

As an added bonus, the upholstered chairs are also stackable - a unique feature rarely seen in upholstered seating. All these design details make the set especially practical in small spaces.

        Hydraulic Tray

        $175.00

Handmade from recycled cement, sand, granite and marble dust from the stone industry, the Hydraulic Tray results from the traditional application for tile making.

For easy cleaning and maintenance, every tray is coated with varnish that seals the surface, similar to the one used for hydraulic cement floors.

        STORY

The process for making traditional encaustic cement tiles relies on highly skilled labour, rather than technology investment. These trays are handmade one by one, following a traditional recipe that gives the best results, in terms of toughness, durability, detail, and colour uniformity. These tiles show two layers with distinctive characteristics: the top one is done with the finest white cement, mixed with marble and granite dust, and colour, giving a very fine and smooth surface. The backing layer is a dry mix of sand and cement that supports the top layer. Designer Carlos Ortega wanted these trays to show these layers, as they tell how it is made.

Ortega uses marble and granite recycled from the natural stone industry, mainly saw dust waste. The finest aggregates combined with a smooth mould give the best surface. Top quality pigments are also important. The process gives us the chance to experiment with different shapes by simply making moulds. Each shape can also show a variety of coloured patterns, possibilities are endless.

        Woork (Wood + Cork) Chair

        $895.00

Handmade in Spain from sustainable oak and cork, the Woork Chair, by Carlos Ortega Design, is an amazingly comfortable and stylish lounge chair.

Ortega uses oak (Quercus Alba) and cork (Quercus Suber), both coming from the same tree species, and that is probably why they combine so well.

The Woork Chair's production follows the same principles of Ortega's acclaimed Corkigami Chair. Featuring the use of laminated cork and laminated wood veneer, Ortega tries to get the best out of each material. The production process involves the lamination of different pieces (cork and wood) which are cut to size and then carefully glued together. This resembles shoe making techniques. A hard wearing finishing coat will be applied as a finishing touch.

This simple and visually arresting design fits perfectly in any living room, bedroom, children's room, men's den, and workspace.
