DESIGN TRENDS | wonderland

DESIGN TRENDS | wonderland

Wonderland is an evolution of wanting to embrace nature in all its senses.

There is a longing towards the Nordic Shores with a strong feel of escapism. Colder climates and rougher landscapes are the new destinations where the human being has a much more difficult access to. This limitation makes it much more appreciated. Snow and ice stand for the ethereal, whereas floating icebergs are the new symbol to watch.

Inspired by this atmosphere, the winter interior trend Wonderland was born – it nourishes itself from creative vibes in arts, fashion, design.

Wonderland /

Draws major inspiration from the Nordic nature and brings the feeling of nature into our lives and homes | Evokes escapism and the desire to discover the inaccessible, the undiscovered | Ethereal, sometimes intangible | Desire to liberate from the conventions and limits, it refers to our inner urge to cut off the strings that make us function in our mundane life | Elusive, frosty colors, cold whites, icy blues, dark greens -but also opposing lava reds and other volcanic hues, soft sunset colors.

To be inspired, see the Green Design Gallery’s Wonderland Collection.

      STORY

SHEEP RUGS | Vacht Van Vilt - This amazing ethical company sources wool from small local farms only. They collect it personally to ensure quality and transparency in the well-being of the sheep. Unfortunately, over the last years sheep wool increasingly became a waste product. We need to make sure that this wonderful sustainable product will not become waste.

The leather free rugs are all handmade in Holland and felted with organic olive soap. Because the rugs are made from sheared wool, the artisan can make a rug every year from each sheep. It is a sustainable and honest product. At the back of the rug there's a felted rag of carded (combed) wool. This helps the rug to remain firmly together. These rags are carded from the artisan's own wool, confirming the sheep's origin and good treatment. Once there's enough carded wool for a rug, the rag is put on on shaved sheep wool. Now the felting begins, which is a lot of work! With water, soap and friction the wool fibers attach themselves to each other. After felting, the rug is thoroughly washed. When the rug is dry and clean, an authenticity stamp is sewn on. Each rug has it's own number, and is unique! The rugs come with their own custom-made bag.

UNIQWA - The ethos behind Uniqwa is to use recycled and plantation woods in their range to create contemporary design. Featuring the exotic influence of African culture integrated with contemporary flair, Uniqwa’s distinctive and inspiring pieces are a stunning addition to any room.

“I am and always have been inspired by the culture that I grew up in. It is such a creative place where people use materials often overlooked to create the most amazing pieces of art. • Horizon Carpet | Fishing Nets + Wool

      Rug Solid

Horizon Carpet | Fishing Nets + Wool

      $275.00

Handmade from a blend of wool and recycled fishing nets, the Horizon Carpet is handwoven together by using recycled cotton thread.

The designs are created by French industrial designer Jocelyn Deris, inspired by the changing horizons and landscapes around our world.

The name Horizon emerges with the hope that innovative use of our natural resources can change the horizons for future generations. Thus, the idea of Horizon strikes at the core of our belief, that creative choice of materials and production can benefit our planet, one step at a time.

Horizon is available in 2 sizes and in three different colors fitting most styles and spaces.

      STORY

When you feel this carpet between your hands, you will feel the care that has gone into the dense weave. Of course it is less expensive, and easier to produce carpeting in conventional manner. There is, however, not much reuse of materials, which is why we believe this method is worth the effort. Another advantage is that no two carpets are the same; each carpet has its own particular and beautiful details.

During the production process, a uniform and tight weaving is a priority, so the end result is a high-quality carpet that will be long lasting, contemporary and earth-conscious.

Danish brand Rug Solid’s fundamental idea is rooted in recycling. They are taking it upon themselves to create new life by transforming waste into beautiful, unique design rugs in an exquisite quality. Less waste. More function. It’s that simple.

Rug Solid's products are certified Global Recycled Standard (GRS). The standard applies to the full supply chain and addresses traceability, environmental principles, social requirements, and labeling. GRS was developed with the textile industry in mind.

                  Technical information

Daily cleaning may be done with regular vacuuming or by beating the rug. If the rug is stained, it's often easier to rinse it with a garden hose than using a brush to avoid rubbing the stain in further between the fibers. Stretch the rug immediately if it gets wet.

Since these products are woven by hand, the size may vary by 3-5%. Some floors can be delicate and particularly susceptible, we therefore recommend that the carpet used with a rug underlay to prevent staining on the floor. If in doubt, check with the flooring manufacturer. The carpet may be slightly "dented" when put on the floor, but will flatten with use.

                • Wood Casting Slim Console / Cypress or Eucalyptus

                  Hilla Shamia

Wood Casting Slim Console / Cypress or Eucalyptus

                  $4,995.00

Part of the Wood Casting fine art furniture collection by Israeli furniture designer Hilla Shamia, the Slim Console is a one-of-a-kind handmade versatile piece of furniture, featuring gorgeously unique ash lines and imperfections in its wood.

Two colors available: Cypress-light or Eucalyptus-reddish.

The incompleteness and randomness give the product its aesthetic value. Like nature, the final product is unique.

                  STORY

The combination of cast aluminum and locally sourced natural wood preserves the natural form of a burnt tree trunk, creating an emotionally charged renewal that gives life back to this piece. Juxtaposed beautifully against the metal, it's a cohesive piece that can only be defined as fine art furniture.

The collection exhibits a unique combination between two materials, using a completely new technology to create a perfect balance between a natural resource and an industrial matter.

Molten aluminum is poured directly onto the wooden the surface which burns the exterior, the plank is then cut lengthwise and inserted with frame to define its final structure. The casting process is accompanied with high heat, flames and smoke. When the metal is cooled down and the mold breaks apart, the furniture piece reveals the dark border between the hot metal and wood, enabling us to observe the leakage of aluminum and the carbonized wood which is frozen in time.

Design type: One-Of-A-Kind | Handcrafted | Innovative technologies

Materials: Molten aluminium on locally sourced charred Cypress wood

                  Cypress wood facts:

                  • The slow growing, tight ringed cypress is denser than normal wood, making it easily resist shrinkage, and highly energy efficient;
                  • Excellent at absorbing stains;
                  • Planes easily and resists warping;
                  • Its heartwood contains the natural preservative oil cypressene, which is what makes cypress wood resist to rot, insects, and decay

                • Remnant Cotton Rug | Eternity Blue

                  Rug Solid

Remnant Cotton Rug | Eternity Blue

                  $39.00

Handwoven with cotton remnants from the fashion industry, the exquisite Remnant Rug will add an absolute extra coolness to your floor.

The handcrafted cotton rug has been woven with a series of cotton strips - remains from the international fashion industry. Normally, these would meet their sad end in a container, and later probably at a disposal facility. Instead, they are now used to bring you this beautiful and unique cotton rug.

When the fashion industry makes shirts, skirts and other cool stuff, they end up with many cotton leftovers. Rug Solid loves garbage. They bring the leftover materials to a small village in India, where they sort the colours, shred the cotton, and weave the thousands of small pieces to end up with a one-of-a-kind rug. All done by hand naturally. If you have the patience (and a dash of luck), you might recognize a pattern or some details from last season’s fashion collection.

                  Available in 6 sizes.

                  STORY

When you feel this carpet between your hands, you will also feel the care that has gone into the dense weave.

If the rug is stained, it's often easier to rinse it with a garden hose than using a brush to avoid rubbing the stain in further between the fibres.

                  Hush Seating Pod

                  $3,595.00

Hush is a felt seating pod handcrafted entirely from biodegradable materials, which users can crawl into to work or rest in private.

"By creating an enclosed space, Hush provides a personal retreat, a luxurious escape into a dark, hushed, natural space in the midst of a busy hotel, airport, office or library," explains British designer Freyja Sewell.

                  STORY

The main body of HUSH is cut from a single piece of 10mm industrial wool felt. Wool is naturally flame retardant, breathable, durable and elastic; it is also multi-climatic, meaning it is warm when the environment is cold and cool when it’s warm. It is of course biodegradable and so won’t clog up landfill after disposal. It is produced sustainably from animals out in the open, with each sheep producing a new fleece each year. The internal padding of HUSH is made from recycled wool fibers, produced as a by-product of the British carpet industry.

Freyja Sewell set out to create a private space within a public world, handmade from natural, biodegradable materials. Three years in the making, HUSH is now available for purchase.

Open plan offices and public buildings, online profile sharing, cameras built into our laptops; never has it been easier for humans to connect, but what about when we want to withdraw? It is essential to continue to develop new ways of allowing people to comfortably co-exist in our increasingly densely populated environments.

By creating an enclosed space HUSH provides a personal retreat, a luxurious escape into a dark, hushed, natural space in the midst of a busy hotel, airport, office or library. HUSH provided a quiet space in an age of exponential population growth, where privacy and peaceful respite is an increasingly precious commodity.

                  Cypress Spline Sculpture | One-of-a-Kind

                  $395.00

Introducing the Cypress Spline Sculpture by Hawaii's brand Split Grain. The Spline Sculpture reveals the fascinating contours of a piece of reclaimed wood oriented in a single horizontal spine. Details of the form and grain are exposed from the spaces between each individual slice. Dramatic views from any angle, these sculptures accentuate the twists, turns, bends and arches of the wood while it hovers on its longitudinal axis supported by a custom-made, steel armature. These sculptures are beautiful centerpieces. Lighting them from above or from one side will create dramatic shadows further exposing the form.

This piece is made from California Coastal Cypress mounted on elegant, tall steel rods above the base that allow it to float and flow gracefully with a deep split that changes the shape dramatically from end to end. A rough back and smoother front arc add to its character.

This is truly a one-of-a-kind, handmade, fine art sculpture made from an individual piece of reclaimed wood. This designer begins by finding limbs from trees and hand selecting, cutting, and splitting each piece looking for unique forms. Most of the pieces split are discarded as he looks for pieces with the most intriguing forms. Once a special piece is found, he further refines it, slices it to bring out the details in the overall shape and grain, sands the faces to a fine surface, and finishes with UV protecting clear urethane.

Each piece is drilled to accept mounting on a steel rod on a single horizontal axis so that the piece of wood is kept to its original form. Each piece of wood on its steel rod is mechanically affixed into a two-part steel base. Once they are all secured, I patina the metal to a deep charcoal black surface. The armature is then waxed to a high-polish surface to protect it. Each base is finally finished with a felt bottom for a scratch free surface.

                  Bellota Lamp

                  $245.00

Aerie and organic, the Globe Pendant Lamp is 100% handmade in Poland from upcycled newspapers.

Fitting in any contemporary environment, Bellota is available in 6 colors. It can be used as desk lamp as well as a bedside lamp.

                  STORY

Bedside lamp Bellota is made of paper maché and steel. The shape of the lamp refers to the fruit of the oak acorn, in Spanish ‘Bellota’. Its steel structure consist of two circles. Due to this particularity, the lamp looks different from different points of view.

The paper used for this creation was destroyed, broken into tiny pieces, then transformed into a whole new material entity by a technique using heat. The "new" paper can be shaped in many different ways and in its final form brings an association with nature, its source.

STRAND CONSOLE TABLE | FRENCH OAK

                  $2,495.00

Reminiscent of exotic travels, the Strand Console Table is beautifully organic, earthy and naturally contemporary.

This product creates an effortless stylish and unique coastal look in your home.

                  STORY

Australian based Uniqwa specializes in designer furniture inspired by nature and ethnic culture that fits into contemporary environments. With this, they use recycled and plantation woods predominately local. Being eco friendly and sustainably responsible are part of their core attributes. Uniqwa as the name describes, is uniqueness with a difference.

The focus at Uniqwa is nature inspired with ethnic African and Scandi influences, a casual relaxed yet sophisticated feel to bring personality and warmth to a contemporary environment. They focus on raw combined with soft loose linen mixing both structured and unstructured textural elements bringing a very tactile aesthetic to the interiors market.

The introduction of their basket ware collection is receiving much attention and supporting African grass roots economy, especially in areas such as Zimbabwe. These are rewarding products that have been brought to Australia’s design industry, and now to the world through Green Design Gallery.

Founder of Uniqwa Furniture, Charl van Heerden was born in South Africa, but studied Furniture Design & Technology at RMIT in Australia. “I am and always have been inspired by the culture that I grew up in. A reference in the reutilization of materials, Rotsen meld wood salvaged from decaying bridges, old barns and demolished structures, harvested from fallen, well preserved trees, or from sustainable plantations and well managed forests with metal, glass, and Plexiglas to create furniture that is luxurious, distinct and unforgettable.

Each furniture item is individually hand crafted by highly skilled woodworkers in the United States and Brazil. With strikingly contemporary designs, Rotsen is known for a creative combination of contrasting materials, both new and old.

Each piece has unique characteristics and can be made to order per client’s specifications. For custom projects, please contact design team.

                  STORY

Rotsen creates furniture that will stand the test of time and fleeting fashion - strikingly modern designs that take their unrivaled beauty from the creative combination of contrasting materials.

This is furniture to cherish for a lifetime and pass on to future generations. In a world with finite resources choosing even a single piece of high-quality furniture offers an alternative to buying and replacing a succession of mass-produced pieces destined for the landfill.

Rotsen works with wood from decaying bridges, old barns and demolished structures, harvested from fallen, well preserved trees, or from sustainable plantations and well managed forests to create furniture that is luxurious, distinct and unforgettable.
