Australian based Uniqwa specializes in designer furniture inspired by nature and ethnic culture that fits into contemporary environments. With this, they use recycled and plantation woods predominately local. Being eco friendly and sustainably responsible are part of their core attributes. Uniqwa as the name describes, is uniqueness with a difference.
The focus at Uniqwa is nature inspired with ethnic African and Scandi influences, a casual relaxed yet sophisticated feel to bring personality and warmth to a contemporary environment. They focus on raw combined with soft loose linen mixing both structured and unstructured textural elements bringing a very tactile aesthetic to the interiors market.
The introduction of their basket ware collection is receiving much attention and supporting African grass roots economy, especially in areas such as Zimbabwe. These are rewarding products that have been brought to Australia’s design industry, and now to the world through Green Design Gallery.
Founder of Uniqwa Furniture, Charl van Heerden was born in South Africa, but studied Furniture Design & Technology at RMIT in Australia. “I am and always have been inspired by the culture that I grew up in. It is such a creative place where people use materials often overlooked to create the most amazing pieces of art. I have learned that there is the potential for beauty in everything around us, but it is the way we use it, the way we see it and the way we apply it that makes it beautiful.”
