The wood beams function both as an alternative to the buttons that pindown the cushioned fabric and as means of giving a shape and a pattern to an otherwise blank surface.
This piece calls into attention the peculiar nature of wood beams as an element that transcends, throughout the history of furniture, the entire range between function and decoration.
The name of the project, Lignes de Capiton, is a reference to Jacques Lacan’s term “Point de Capiton” – the point(s) in which the signified and signifier are held together, giving rise to an illusion of a fixed meaning to language.
Lignes de capiton is an aesthetic and conceptual development of 75% Control, in which the wooden frame’s added value of comfort comes to the fore, similarly to the way in which bed frames are structured.
This project expresses my ongoing fascination with using frame details as structure and decoration, and with alternative ways of creating textile patterns.
Dafi Reis-Doron is a graduate of industrial design from the Bezalel Academy with honors (Bachelor’s 2006) and the Royal College of Art (Masters 2012) in design product.
Dafi has worked for several years in Keter, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of plastic products. She began as part of the prestigious D-vision program, and later became a development manager in the Keter Home section. With Keter she created many products that are still within the Argos, B&Q and Walmart range of merchandise.
Upon her graduation from the RCA, Dafi set up her own studio which provides industrial design services for clients and initiates independent, experimental design projects. Dafi’s independent work is showcased in galleries and exhibitions around the world, such as the Mint and Aram galleries in London,Ventura Lambrate in Milan and Pamono website in Berlin.
Dafi’s industrial clients benefit from her innovative approach as it revitalizes their production with new ideas and processes. In her own design lab, Dafi uses her knowledge and experience in industry to create original objects that challenge common industrial manufacturing processes, materials and morphologies.
