    Qvist Chair

    $1,196.00

Striking piece of art furniture, the Qvist Chair consists of a network of curving lines meeting into a whole identity expressing a lovely poetry and elegance.

Its shape is at first achieved through work in 3D, then it's split into 17 sub-elements and refined in 2D. The various laminated birch veneer elements are then milled out on a CNC machine, for afterwards being individually oiled and stained, adding to its durability. Finally, the elements are screwed together, so that they form the object in its entirety.

    STORY

The chair is the result of Danish designer and architect Peter Qvist's penchant for advanced dynamic modeling. The structure of the chair might appear complex, but the overall look is very simple and streamlined. And exactly this tension between complexity and simplicity was the main aim of this chair design.

Internationally acclaimed Qvist has a distinct style of expression that is recognizable throughout his furniture, architecture and art projects. Qvist has made it his trademark to combine advanced 3D modeling with skilled craftsmanship. An uncompromising approach to creating unique furniture led to the perfect balance between design, functionality and art.

    Carlos Ortega

    Corkigami Chair | Natural

    $745.00

The Corkigami Chair, by Spanish designer Carlos Ortega, takes a flat material - cork - and much like paper, folds it in an origami-like manner, hence the name, into a three-dimensional shape that you can actually sit on.

The chair is available in 2 color choices, natural and chocolate.

    STORY

Cork is quite flexible and strong at the same time, and this chair decided to push both of these properties to the limit. The shell rests on a solid oak stool, resulting in a very attractive design. To protect the cork, Ortega applies water-based varnish suitable for hard wearing surfaces such as cork floors, it is very flexible and makes the chair highly durable.

Cork makes for a comfortable seat structure that not only supports your body weight, it conforms to your body as you lean back. Cork is lightweight and is a sustainable material that can easily be recycled making it the perfect material choice. Four layers of 4mm thick cork are pressed flat together using a water-based glue. The shape is cut out, pulled together in place, and glued for extra strength. The natural cork happens to be the same color as the oak wooden legs creating continuity. Four simple screws connect the seat to the legs.

    DESIGNER

As Carlos Ortega started to imagine a seat made entirely out of cork, everyone said it was impossible, then he realized he had a challenge to work on. Cork is natural, sustainable, lightweight, quite strong, flexible, warm. All these qualities make cork a unique material. Corkigami aims to take these properties to the limit, and also refers to the process of making 3D objects from 2D materials.

CORK, A SUSTAINABLE, ECO-FRIENDLY, INNOVATIVE MATERIAL FOR THE HOME

Sustainability has been a hot topic for a good few years now and designers are increasingly looking for materials that have a lesser impact on the environment. Materials that are recycled, recyclable, or come from renewable sources are gaining in popularity and really starting to make their mark in product design and architecture.

However, there are some sustainable materials that have been around for years and that have, until now, been somewhat overlooked. One of these materials is cork, an impermeable, buoyant, elastic and fire resistant material that is harvested from the cork oak forests of Southern Europe and North Africa. Cork comes from the bark of the Cork Oak Tree. The extraction of the bark is a process that doesn’t harm the tree and it is renewable. Every nine years there is new bark to be removed. Cork is a material that comes directly from nature and there is very little processing involved. The ecological footprint from its extraction until the final product is incredibly low compared to the industry average of plastic production.

When you hold a cork object in your hand you notice that you are holding a bit of nature, that’s the beauty of cork. Moreover, because cork is sustainable, the more people buy it, the more the cork industry needs to plant more cork oak trees, and that creates a cycle that is healthy for the environment of our planet. So supporting cork is supporting nature. When designers find cork, they find a perfect material for their creations, one that responds to all of their concerns because it is aesthetically beautiful, functional and eco-friendly.

    Carlos Ortega

    Woork (Wood + Cork) Chair

    $895.00

Handmade in Spain from sustainable oak and cork, the Woork Chair, by Carlos Ortega Design, is an amazingly comfortable and stylish lounge chair.

Ortega uses oak (Quercus Alba) and cork (Quercus Suber), both coming from the same tree species, and that is probably why they combine so well.

The Woork Chair's production follows the same principles of Ortega's acclaimed Corkigami Chair. Featuring the use of laminated cork and laminated wood veneer, Ortega tries to get the best out of each material. The production process involves the lamination of different pieces (cork and wood) which are cut to size and then carefully glued together. This resembles shoe making techniques. A hard wearing finishing coat will be applied as a finishing touch.

This simple and visually arresting design fits perfectly in any living room, bedroom, children's room, men's den, and workspace.

    STORY

Spanish studio Carlos Ortega Design imagines and produces furniture, lightning, consumer goods, mainly made of wood. The wood is sourced from well-managed forests, so you can be sure it is designed and manufactured by keeping the environment in mind.

Inspired by raw materials and low-waste manufacturing processes Ortega delivers top quality and long lasting products. The designer develops relevant products that perform well, driven by his observation of usability and identification of needs.

    Gap Chair

    $495.00

Produced by the latest CNC technology and hand finished in Spain, the FSC oak wood Gap Chair is great both in a home and office settings.

Great in small spaces, the Gap Chair is stackable and can go outdoors.

    STORY

Taking a very artistic approach, the wave-inspired Gap chair is as beautiful to look at as it is comfortable to sit on. The individual cross beams help support the frame structurally while creating a sleek, striking look.

The wavy cross bars that form the seat and back have “gaps” that are needed for stabilization, hence the name. It also refers to the “border between indoors and outdoors, fusing them into one”, since the chair works indoors as well as out.

The chair is held together with screws to help withstand the elements of the outdoors, something glue wouldn’t be able to do. All components are mechanized using low-waste CNC technology. The traditional mortise and tenon structure is held together by means of screws. Gap optimizes material: it uses just 0,016 sq mt from the thinnest sawn boards normally available.

Kross Chair | Open Source Design

    $895.00

The comfortable and relaxed Kross Chair is part of Germany's design firm Lesmo's Kross Collection, and features a contemporary and eco-conscious design.

Made of simple and straight pieces of plywood, the Kross Chair is produced by the latest CNC technology, flat-packed in Germany and ready to be purchased through Green Design Gallery.

Also, having sustainability as a strong core value and since Arakno is an open source design project, Lesmo and GDG decided to share the plans to be downloaded for free (link below).

Other shared design Kross Collection items include the Kross Stool, the Kross Lamp and the Kross Side Table.

    STORY

The German based brand Lesmo (Less-is-More) develops 3D tangible objects out of 2D flat materials, using the latest CNC technology.

The items are produced by a CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machine; which is used to cut shapes with a spinning blade from wooden, but also plastic and metal, panels. CNC mills translate a 2D or 3D computer drawing in a cut shape or engraving. They were developed from the 70s for mass manufacture, but have become common also for small, more sustainable scale production, thanks to the spreading of computer use in design. Avoiding the need to produce prototypes, this new process is known for being eco-friendly, in that it's also energy efficient and it reduces waste during production.

    Sustainable Design Without Compromising Performance

    KRAFT PAPER

Kraft paper is a 100% biodegradable natural product. The pulp is made from long virgin fibres of maritime pine and is not bleached, to ensure minimum chemical processing and to retain the wood's natural colour. Kraft paper biodegrades entirely naturally. Just like the leaves from the trees, kraft paper decomposes naturally within a few weeks, returning to its initial form of cellulose fibres, which can be fully assimilated back into its original natural environment, with no adverse impact on nature or human health. The production of kraft paper is an entirely closed-cycle process. All materials resulting from the process are recovered and recycled, and waste is used as a source of energy. This entirely closed-cycle system has major benefits, both environmental and economic.

    Peter Qvist

    peak lounge chair

    $2,870.00

The Peak Lounge Chair is the result of Danish designer and architect Peter Qvist penchant for advanced dynamic modeling. It goes perfectly with its set companion, the Peak Footstool

Careful attention to detail and craftsmanship give a human presence and touch to the furniture.

The chair shape is at first achieved through work in 3D, then it is split into 26 sub-elements and refined in 2D. The various laminated birch veneer elements are then milled out on a CNC machine, for afterwards being individually oiled and stained, adding to its durability. Finally, the elements are screwed together, so that they form the chair in its entirety.

    STORY

The structure of the item may appear complex, but the overall look is very simple and streamlined. The tension between complexity and simplicity was precisely the main objective of this design.

The asymmetric design provides an ever-changing experience all the way around and creates an encouraging atmosphere in the room. The artistic shape attracts attention and beauty in the eye of the beholder.

Internationally acclaimed Danish designer and architect Peter Qvist has a distinct style of expression that is recognizable throughout his furniture, architecture and art projects. Qvist has made it his trademark to combine advanced 3D modeling with skilled craftsmanship.

An uncompromising approach to creating unique furniture led to the perfect balance between design, functionality and art.

Birch trees are native to northern Europe and Russia. It is an abundant, fast growing species; there is no destruction or disruption of biodiversity when birch is felled. Birch is high strength, wear-resistance, moisture resistant, high surface quality and integrity.

Acclaimed Danish designer and architect Peter Qvist put icing on the cake by adding a footstool to the fabulous Peak Lounge Chair.

    Qvist Rocking Chair + Stool

    $4,295.00

Introducing the future-forward newly launched Qvist Rocking Chair + Stool by Danish architect and furniture designer Peter Qvist.

Combining structural stability with a transparent design, the wooden chair and stool are made from laminated birch veneer and polyester to serve as a distinctive furniture piece for both the interiors and outdoors.

This future-forward design is a great way to add comfort along with style in your home. The designer has kept the rocking chair comfortable enough with the thick black polyester line and birch veneer which is separately oiled and waxed to offer a dramatic appeal to the chair. Its perforated seat blends beautifully with the white – wooden frame of the chair which goes well with light colored interiors.

The wooden frame of the rocker chair has rustic touches of birch wood to give it a minimalist look which gives your space an aesthetic appeal. It has no arm–rests, so you can comfortably lean against it to take a catnap with you legs fully rested on its footrest.

The Qvist rocking chair is a result of Qvist re-imagination and creativity to make a functional furniture that looks unique in any room with its transparent design. Its curved and flat design not only improves your basic health, but its low-lying structure makes it a comfy accessory for Dementia patients.

The idea of combining the simplicity and strength of iron with the natural elegance of wood – mainly reclaimed, reused wood – sprang from a creative process based on fundamental forms, environmental sustainability and a reinterpretation of the traditional craft styles of north-eastern Italy, where Carapace was born.

The brand designs and builds their products exclusively to order. Each piece is numbered and signed by Carapace © in Italy and comes with its own certificate of authenticity.

    Studio La Cube

    Simmis Stool | Side Table

    $395.00 $295.00

The Simmis Stool has been created with the intention to experiment with geometric shapes, intervening on the form as well as on the texture of the product.

The result is a robust and strong figure which allows for the material natural characteristics to stand out. Following the Simmis series and connecting it with the Simmis Chair, the central incision was made, which divides the stool, like the chair, into two identical halves, giving lightness in order to balance the figure.

    STORY

Studio La Cube works under a fundamental concept with infinite interpretations: the cube. The brand was founded with the idea to create a workspace in which to build and deconstruct this form in everyday objects. In addition to this, they research the best quality for their products, based on two basic concepts: the quality of the raw material and the craft production process. Their approach is highly minimalistic to the form and symmetry.

Through natural materials, they stay true to the rusticity of wood, iron and ceramics, displayed in their authenticity, with almost imperceptible treatments that highlight the natural qualities of matter. See other Studio La Cube products in our Decor, Tables and Seating Collections)
